Whether it's the new year, a new academic year, graduation, changing schools or any huge change in your life new beginnings symbolise and reticulate change. Some people find change hard to deal with and others appreciate it.

A common idea people follow for new beginnings is that you are bound to work on something and set goals. For example, when the new year is approaching, people set many resolutions and goals, whether necessary or not. If you want to improve some aspect of your life setting goals and resolutions is a great thing and you should not wait for an opportunity such as the new year to change that aspect, you should do it instantly whereas when you are satisfied with your life and you see people setting goals and resolutions, you are influenced to do the same. This causes many people to always look for a negative aspect of their life to improve and develop an overly critical mindset. Knowing how important the thing you want to improve and how big of a priority it is, really helps in dealing with change and managing it.

These are a few things you can do when you feel like there's a new beginning in your life~

  • Finding a balance and goals - Having clarity on what you need to improve and what you're good at helps you decide what goals you should set. It is not always necessary to set goals, with the internet's new obsession with productivity in recent years there's only been more stress and productivity guilt. Just a reminder that you don't always have to be working or doing something productive. It is completely normal to have days where you do nothing "productive". You don't have to study every day, there can be days when you do something else such as going on a walk or binge-watching a series, which is normal. Live life slowly because if you spend all your time doing something which doesn't make you feel happy and makes you feel tired, you are pretty much wasting your time. As teenagers, we have two completely different things being told to us one of them being to work hard as these are the most crucial years of our lives to work hard and the other that these are the best years of our life and we should enjoy every moment. It can get very hard to live up to both statements. Having a balance means having days where you do nothing which is typically considered "productive" and days where you get done with work.

  • Journaling- If you don't have many people you can talk to, about your life to, keeping a journal and writing about your day helps. It also helps you get an idea of what influences the emotions you feel on a day-to-day basis. Journaling also helps achieve sub-goals which ultimately help you deal with change such as

  1. Letting go of all the negative experiences you've had.

  2. Talking to yourself positively and not being too harsh on yourself.

  3. Prioritising what's important to you.

New beginnings can be hard, but knowing that you can always find a way to deal with all the things you find hard, really helps to keep going.

"The chief beauty about time is that you cannot waste it in advance. The next year, the next day, and the next hour are lying ready for you, as perfect, as unspoiled, as if you had never wasted or misapplied a single moment in all your life. You can turn over a new leaf every hour if you choose" - Arnold Benett
